How do you connect to your inner guidance?

A woman with red hair is looking at the horizon.

There is a beautiful saying attributed to a Cherokee proverb: "A woman's highest calling is to lead a man to his soul so as to unite him with Source. A man's highest calling is to protect a woman so she is free to walk the earth unharmed." I love it because it shows our capacity, as women, to be connected to the spiritual world and embody it on earth.

The truth is that we are all connected to our inner guidance, or our intuition, if you prefer that term. I like to refer to it as my inner oracle, a terminology I find beautiful and somewhat poetic. Regardless of the words we choose, we all have the ability to lead from a place of inner knowing.

The impact of science

First, I want to highlight some foundational concepts regarding how we perceive and interact with words. Our understanding shapes our ability to connect with our inner wisdom. We live in a world dominated by logic, rationality, science, and external evidence. It is the norm to believe that the information and knowledge we seek must come from outside ourselves, through various sources such as books, journals, people, teachers, universities, and training.

The crucial point to understand is that we have been taught to look externally when we want to learn or seek information and guidance. Our usual approach is, "I will look outside of myself; knowledge comes from external logical sources." However, to connect with your inner guidance, it is essential to reflect on this paradigm and consider another way of knowing—one that does not require you to seek information outside of yourself but instead encourages you to look within for answers.

Consider yourself as a browser

The first step is to open the door to a reality where knowledge can come both from the rational and external world as well as from your internal world. This internal knowledge arises from your relationship with the spiritual world, the earth, and your body. The insights you gain from your inner guidance may not be logical. Instead, they manifest in a more visual, abstract, non-linear, somatic, and poetic manner.

It is crucial not to judge this knowledge and to allow it space to exist. You don’t need to understand its logic all the time. Your inner guidance is less about reason and linearity and more about your experiences and feelings. It is a somatic experience, something you feel in your body—a knowing that may not be easily articulated. Avoid the urge to analyze and understand everything thoroughly, and let it flow without judgments.

As a woman, you are inherently connected to the land, the earth, the cycles of nature, and the spiritual realm. I like to consider myself a web browser. I can seek answers or guidance simply by thinking about a question, because I am the browser. I don’t need to look outside of myself; I trust that, at some point, I will receive an answer. As the browser, I am immersed in the web around me; I am energetically connected to it and a part of it.

Find where and when your inner guidance is louder

If you firmly believe that there are two ways of knowing—one external that relies on logic, and another internal that depends on intuition and your ability to receive—you will naturally connect to your inner oracle. Neither of these methods for gaining information is better than the other; both are useful. However, the second method has been repressed for centuries. This repression has caused us to suffer, much like during the witch hunts. This is why, connecting to your inner oracle may be easier in places where you feel deeply safe.

The truth is, there is a time for everything. There is a time for logic, reason, and science, as well as a time for intuition and inner guidance. You need to be curious about which places and moments feel safe and inspiring, as these can help you connect to your intuition. I firmly believe in the power of nature, gardening, movement, dance, and art to help us tap into our inner guidance. However, your way of connecting with your inner guidance might be completely different. Curiosity is key here.

One thing is certain: the more you connect to your inner oracle, the more you will receive. Once you create space for your capacity to receive, you will begin to receive guidance. It may not come directly when you ask, and often it won’t. This doesn't mean that it isn't working. You will typically receive intuitive information at other moments—usually when you are not thinking about it or waiting for it. It is quite common for our intuition to communicate the most during mundane tasks or unexpected times.
